My work aims to and has enhanced STEM ecosystems via national alliances that include partnerships spanning federal agencies, industry, and academia. This demonstrates my leadership in fostering innovation and excellence.

AI & Health Tech Research

My research explores data work and science at the intersections of AI bias, health tech and innovation/entrepreneurship. My work paves the way to understand the implications of technology’s impacts on the lived experience.

A Voice for Change & Excellence

My advocacy extends to national scales, where I contribute to the National Academies of Science, Engineering, and Medicine and other national and international professional organizations, leadership advisement and keynote speaking.

Education and Professional Journey

I began my academic career by completing the AUC Dual-Degree Engineering program. I graduated with a BA in Accounting and a minor in Mathematics from Clark Atlanta University and a BS in Industrial and Systems Engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology. I earned an MBA in Decision Sciences at Clark Atlanta University.

 

I earned my Ph.D. in Information & Decision Systems (now known as the Design and Innovation group) from Case Western Reserve University.  My doctoral studies, supported by a General Electric Fellowship, included a secondary focus on Health Systems, involving interdisciplinary coursework across the Schools of Medicine, Engineering, Nursing, and Law. My professional experience spans significant roles at EY Consulting in the National Health Practice, Time Inc. in logistics and distribution, and IBM in manufacturing, extending my expertise across the healthcare, finance, and insurance sectors.

Academic and Research Career

Achieving the rank of Professor Emerita and Full Professor (with Tenure) of Information Technology/Analytics at North Carolina State University, I have been recognized as a University Faculty Scholar, leading initiatives that turn research into solutions for societal challenges.

 

My research spans AI fairness, health tech, data science, and tech innovation/entrepreneurship.

Science Funding and Beyond

During my role at the National Science Foundation (NSF), I led the CISE Research Expansion Program and contributed to numerous initiatives and earned the NSF Director’s Award.  I worked with the NSF/NIH Smart Health and Biomedical Research in the Era of Artificial Intelligence and Advanced Data Science, research initiatives for  innovation partnerships, and STEM participation.

Leadership Excellence

I served on the Association for Computing Machinery, IEEE, National Academies for Science, Engineering, and Medicine, INFORMS, and the American Council for Education.

Publications and Public Engagement

My scholarly output includes over 150 peer-reviewed journal articles, conference publications, and book chapters. I am a sought-after speaker, consultant, and panelist who addresses critical issues in talent management, data and algorithmic bias, leadership, career development, and tech excellence.

 

My insights have been featured in prominent media outlets and events, such as Scientific American, MIT Tech Review, IEEE Spectrum, Capital B, Forbes, Brookings Institute and others.
